DULL SKIN TONE: A therapist recommends
We’ve all been there, those mornings when you look in the mirror and see a tired, dull, uneven or even damaged skin looking back at you. Nobody wants that!
The good news is there are things you can do about it… you just need a better understanding of what makes your skin smile.
That's why over the next few weeks Suzi, our Dermal Trainer who has solved the skin woes of 1,000's of clients over the past decade as a practicising therapist, will talk to you about some common skin concerns and what you can do for each if they are affecting you personally.
First up, she helps us tackle Dull Skin Tone.
THE PROBLEM: Dull, lackluster, lifeless looking skin
What our Dermal Therapist says
Ok, so this is a common one and can appear one day and be gone the next.. what the?!
Well that’s because two major contributing factors to dull skin tone is your daily water intake and how you slept the night before. Your skin regenerates itself while you sleep, and a hydrated skin will regenerate better. So ensure 8 hours of rest each night to give your skin plenty of time to restore itself.
Another factor to your dull skin tone is a build up of dead skin cells.
So, we know the skin is comprised of three layers: The Epidermis (the top layer), the Dermis and the Hypodermis. But did you know that the Epidermis alone is comprised of 5 individual layers, and the top layer of that, called the stratum corneum, is then comprised of approximately 25-30 tiny individual layers? Yes that’s a lot of layers!
So what do we need to do? Exfoliate. The skin has a natural desquamation process which promotes shedding of cells, but genetics and ageing will affect how your skin cells shed on their own. Imagine if your cells are not shedding as they should, as a result you now have an accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. This is definitely a recipe for a dull complexion!
What our Dermal Therapist recommends
In terms of at-home solutions, Dermalist’s Ultra Smoothing Facial Exfoliant is my dream ‘go to’ product when it comes to effective exfoliation and let me tell you why… Tagua seeds. These are real seeds, not like the plastic ones that you find in a lot of exfoliants. These seeds are ground down to create a perfectly smooth and uniform beads that polish the skin as it glides over it. This exfoliant has chemical and physical mechanisms and contains a variety of AHAs at the perfect concentrations to gently buff off the excess dead skin cells that lead to dull skin.

Another important thing for dull skin tone is anything that boosts your skin’ circulation. The Epidermis does not contain blood vessels so receives its nutrients from the deeper layers. This means to give your skin more of a healthy rosy glow you should incorporate in-clinic treatments such a Medi-Facials and Microdermabrasion, they are my go-to for a non-invasive quick skin pick me up.
In-Clinic ‘Medi Facials’ use massage techniques for increased circulation while Microdermabrasion is very effective at sloughing off dead skin cells whilst the gentle vacuum suction promotes blood supply and circulation to the superficial skin layers resulting in a brighter complexion. Goodbye dull skin tone!
Conclusion
So there you have it – if you want to trade dull, lacklustre skin for that of a glowing goddess, make sure to hydrate, get enough sleep and look to incorporate an superstar exfoliating product and quick even some common, non-evasive in-clinic treatments into your routine.
